Riffyn SDE: a next-generation data system that evolves with you
If you’ve ever felt frustrated by the inflexibility of your current LIMS system you’re not alone. Traditional LIMS systems are great for tracking samples in a pre-defined experimental design template. However, the moment your experiment changes, your LIMS system is out of date. This typically requires you to contact your IT department and request a change, which might take anywhere from weeks (if you’re lucky) to months (typically). In the meantime, you are still collecting data, so where does it go? Mostly likely you’re either adding incomplete data to your LIMS system or you’re shoving your results in Excel spreadsheets thinking that you will add it to your LIMS system later (though, in my experience, later often never comes).
At Riffyn, we are all too familiar with the above story, which is why we designed Riffyn SDE differently. It is designed to be updated on the fly by scientists without needing to involve IT for most changes. A Riffyn SDE process evolves as your experiment evolves.
How do we do it?
We started by creating a user interface to design experimental processes that is visual and intuitive. To add new steps to your process, you simply add the step and drag-and-drop it to connect it to steps upstream and downstream. An example would be if you decided to add an additional analytical assay (let’s call it an absorbance measurement) to your experiment design. You could simply drop in a step for the absorbance measurement and connect this to your upstream step. The absorbance measurement step could be a predefined block in Riffyn SDE which already contains all the fields you need, or it could be a blank template and you can add the relevant data fields as you go. Either way, you are in control of which data fields are defined in your process.
Another example of flexibility involves the ability to add data fields to an ongoing experiment. Let’s say you are collecting data regarding retention times of peaks in your HPLC chromatograph; you observe an unexpected peak and want to record its retention time and AUC. This might be difficult in a traditional LIMS systems (or would take weeks to months to get the fields added, as described above). However, in Riffyn, you simply go to the modify tab, add the relevant data fields, and your experimental template is updated in real time allowing you to record the data within minutes after you collect it. You can either leave that change as a temporary change used only in that one experiment, or you can push the change to the process template to be a global modification used by all future experiments. What’s more, you will have no trouble combining the experimental data from this experiment with earlier experimental data that did not contain these data fields. Riffyn’s patented data integration algorithm assembles data across all the different versions of a process seamlessly so you can analyze all your experiments across time, including their methodological changes.
